Environmental MICROBIOlogy Laboratory
The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory focuses on issues primarily related to the assessment of microbiological quality in various environmental matrices (freshwater, seawater, waste, food) and the quantification of environmental microorganisms (bacteria, parasites, bacteriophages, viruses of intestinal origin).
Research Topics
The Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology of the Technical University of Crete consists of an experienced team that conducts research in various areas of the broader field of environmental microbiology
Cultural & molecular techniques
Application of a variety of techniques Cultural & molecular techniques for isolation and selection micro-organisms.
Μicrobiological quality
Assessment of microbiological quality of the environment with emphasis on the study of pathogenic environmental microorganisms and their impact on public health.
Resistance assessment
Control of dispersal of antibiotics in the aquatic environment & impact on the development of resistance in microbial populations (transfer and mutations of resistance genes, study of the behavior of resistant micro-organisms).
Viruses
Detection and quantification of enteric viruses in the environment. Monitoring the presence and prevalence of enteric viruses in water sources and wastewater.
Wastewater disinfection
Microbiological evaluation of wastewater treatments methods. Τesting of natural and synthetic materials for their antimicrobial activity.
Bioinformatics
Examining microbial behavior and adaptation in different environmental conditions. Insights into microbial ecology, diversity, and function within complex environmental systems.
Projects
The laboratory of Environmental Microbiology is participate in Greek and European funded projects
